Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/2/10 – Keene State College planned
homecoming fireworks after Saturday night's men's soccer game
against Rhode Island College. However, before any explosion
in the sky, sophomore Joe Senecal
(Manchaug, Mass.) provided the fireworks on the field, scoring the
game-winning goal with 1:21 to play in the first overtime to lift
the Owls to a dramatic 1-0 Little East Conference win over the
Anchormen.
Double-teamed going to the net, freshman Scott Douglas (East
Greenwich, R.I.) slid the ball over to Senecal for the
winner.
"I had a couple of guys on my shoulder, so that allowed Joey to
be free," said Douglas. "Fortunately, I was able to get him
the ball."
"Scotty did all the work and I was just there to touch it in,"
said Sencecal, who upped his season goal total to seven.
"They came out playing hard and we just matched them and got the
"W" in the end."
Keene State had the better of the opportunity in the intense and
highly competitive game. Midway thought the first half,
Douglas had a drive from inside the box that sailed just over the
cross bar. Four minutes later, senior Cam Blair (Keene, N.H.)
blasted a shot that just missed the far post.
A force throughout the game, Douglas had a chance to get the
clincher early in the extra secession with a turnaround shot in the
box, but RIC junior goalie Nic Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was
able to get his hand on the ball and steer it over the bar.
With the win, Keene State (8-3, 3-0 LEC) takes over sole
possession of first place in the LEC standings. Rhode Island
College (7-3, 2-1 LEC) suffers its first conference loss and saw
its six game-winning streak come to an end.
Keene State outshot the Anchormen 17-6 and had a slim 5-4
advantage in corner kicks.
KSC senior goalie Paul Blackmer
(Boylston, Mass.) finished the game with two saves to notch his
first career shutout. Clark stopped four shots for RIC.
In LEC play, Keene State leads the series 15-1-1.
Keene State is at Salem State on Wednesday. RIC hosts
Plymouth State next Saturday.
