Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/23/10 – Sophomore midfielder Tracy Sales
(Cumberland, R.I.) scored on a corner kick 3:11 into overtime to
give Western Connecticut State University a 1-0 victory over Keene
State College at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Western Conn. (12-4-1, 5-1 LEC), which extended its consecutive
shutout winning streak to 10 games, jumps over the Owls into second
place in the Little East Conference. Keene State (11-5-2, 4-2 LEC),
which falls into third place in LEC, saw its two game winning
streak come to an end.
Taking her kick from the right corner, Sales curled the ball
into the short side of the net for her game-winning goal.
Keene State junior goalie Megan Dempsey (East
Weymouth, Mass.) kept the Colonials off the board in the first
half, making a pair of diving saves on strong scoring opportunities
by senior midfielder Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, Conn.).
Keene State stepped up its pressure in the second half and had
several chances to get the go-ahead goal. Junior back Melissa
Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.) had a header off a corner that just
missed the far post at the 33:06 mark. Four minutes later
Freshman Jessica Bertthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) had a close-range
shot that was stopped by Colonial sophomore keeper Caitlin Avery
(East Hampton, Conn.).
WCSU finished the game with a 16-8 advantage in shots and led
6-1 in corner kicks.
Dempsey, who had a strong game in goal for KSC, finished the
game with eight saves. Avery stopped three shots to notch her
sixth shutout of the season
Keene State completes its home regular season schedule on
Wednesday with a non-conference game against Bridgewater
State. Western Conn. host Stevens Tech on Wednesday.
