CHANDLER, AZ. 3/15/10 – The
Keene State College baseball team extended its spring week winning
streak to four games with a come-from-behind 15-8 victory over
Western New England College at Snedigar Field in Chandler, Arizona
on Monday.
Falling behind
4-1, Keene State scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead
for good 8-4. Senior Keith Patnode (Keene,
N.H.) delivered the big hit in the inning, a bases-clearing triple
down the right field line that gave KSC a 5-4 lead. Sophomore
Cody Callahan (Seekonk, Mass.) had a two-run
single up the middle later in the inning to make it 8-4.
“We were
fortunate to be down only 4-1,” said KSC Coach Ken
Howe. “Our bats finally got going and we were
able to get a nice comeback win.”
The Owls used the long ball to
extend their lead. In the seventh, sophomore Kyle
Morrill (Auburn, Maine) hit his second home run of the
trip, a two-run shot. After an RBI single from Jesse
Cahill (Cranston, R.I), junior Bobby
Doyon (Keene, N.H.) hit an opposite-field solo home run to
put KSC up 12-5.
Patnode, who finished the game with
three hits and four RBIs, had a solo blast in the eight that make
it 13-7. “The offense is doing what it's expected
to do and our pitching and defense are holding their own,”
said Patnode.
Doyon just missed
hitting for the cycle with a single, double, and home run. Keene
State had 14 hits in the game.
After a shaky
start, Dan Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.), a junior
transfer from Manchester (Conn.) Community College, settled down to
get the win in his Owl debut. He went six innings, allowing five
runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk. “I was nervous
when I got out there, but got into a groove later in the
game,” said Nelson.
Keene State (4-1) plays Concordia
College of Wisconsin on Tuesday.
