Baseball: Owls shutout SUNY-Brockport behind Thiesing

CHANDLER, AZ. 3/17/10 – The combination of strong starting pitching, solid defense and timely hitting lifted the Keene State College baseball team to a 3-0 shutout victory over SUNY-Brockport at the Snedigar Sports Complex in Chandler, Arizona on Wednesday.

Sophomore Tim Thiesing (South Grafton, Mass.) tossed three-hit ball over 7 2/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season for the Owls (5-2). He was in control from the start, fanning eight and allowing just one walk.  “I felt good throwing strikes and pounding the zone,” said Thiesing. “Out bullpen has struggled a little bit, so I tried to go as far as I could.”

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Senior Jesse Cahill (Cranston, R.I.) singled, stole second and came home on a two-out RBI single by senior Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.).

With KSC nursing a slim one run lead, Thiesing pitched out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings.  He got out of both jams with key double plays. With runners on first and second and one out in the sixth, Thiesing induced a ground ball to junior second baseman Vinny Ganz (Waterbury, Con.) who turned a nifty 4-6-3 twin killing.  The Owls finished the game with three double plays.

Keene State added an insurance run in the seventh. Sophomore Cody Callahan (Seekonk, Mass.) doubled to the fence in right center.  He went to third on an errant pick-off attempt and scored on a two-out double from Ganz. Callahan scored the Owls' third run in the ninth when he tripled down the right field line and came home on an RBI single through the right side by junior Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.)

Sophomore Dan Wogksch (Bethel, Conn.) closed out the game on the mound for the Owls.  He fanned the last Brockport batter in the eighth and got the side in order in the ninth to record the save.

“It was a little different than most of our ballgames out here,” said KSC Coach Ken Howe.  "We brought our gloves today and we needed them.  Timmy did a great job staying ahead of the hitters.  It was a good bounce back win as we get ready for two big games on Thursday against Johns Hopkins."

Keene State finished the game with eight hits.  Ganz, Callahan, and Cipolla each went 2-4 at the plate.

Keene State plays two seven inning games against Johns Hopkins University on Thursday.
