BABSON PARK, MASS. 3/25/10 – The Keene State College baseball
team began its New England schedule with an 8-5 non-conference loss
to Babson College at Govoni Field on Thursday. The game,
originally scheduled to be played at Owl Athletic Complex, was
moved to Babson due to poor field conditions in Keene.
With the game tied at five-all in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Senior Peter O'Toole (Salem, Mass.) hit a three-run home run
to center field to give Babson the win.
The Beavers (8-2) extended their winning streak to eight games
while Keene State (7-6) saw its two-game winning streak come to an
end.
Keene State took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double to the
left-centerfield gap by junior Tyler DiPrato
(Suffield, Conn.). After Babson tied the game with single
runs in the first and second, KSC went back up 3-2 on a RBI double
from junior Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.).
A two-run home run by sophomore Travis Jonasson (Needham,
Mass.) gave Babson a 5-3 lead in the fifth.
Patnode made the defensive play of the game in the sixth with a
diving catch of Billy Miller's short fly ball.
Doyon tied the game (5-5) in the top of seventh with a two-run home
run, his third of the season, over the fence in left center.
O'Toole answered with his three-run game-winner in the bottom
of the inning.
“We had some chances, but we didn't have a lot of good
situational at bats moving runners ups when we had an
opportunity,” said KSC Coach Ken Howe.
“We expect to get more than five runs with our
offense.”
Doyon had two hits and three RBIs to lead Keene State's 12
hit attack. Senior Jesse Cahill (Cranston,
R.I.) also had a couple of hits.
Sophomore Tim Thiesing (South Grafton, Mass.), who
took over for starter Jeff Pelkey (Fitzwilliam,
N.H.) in the sixth, took the loss. Junior Kyle
Davis (Rochester, N.H.) also pitched an inning.
Keene State is scheduled to play Springfield College in its
home-opener on Sunday (1 p.m.). If the field is unplayable,
the game will be moved to Springfield.
