Baseball: Owls Outslug Colonels 10-7

BROCKTON, MASS. 4/5/10 – The Keene State College baseball team must like playing games on minor league fields. Keene State made it two-for-two today, outslugging Curry College 10-7 in a game played at Campanelli Stadium, home of the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League. The game was moved to Brockton due to poor field conditions at Curry's Jack Vallely Diamond.

Back in 2007, the Owls defeated rival Plymouth State 8-3 in a game played at Merchantsauto.com Park in Manchester.

Keene State put four runs on the board in the top of the second inning with seniors Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) and Jesse Cahill (Cranston, R.I.) delivering RBI hits.

Curry answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 5-4.  Senior Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, Mass.) plated two of the Colonel's runs with a double.

Keene State came right back with six runs in the top of the third to make it a 10-5 game.  Sophomore Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) had a two-run single and junior Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) doubled to left to bring home two more runs.

Curry scored single runs in the fourth and eighth innings, but KSC was able to hold on for the non-conference win.  “We worked hard to get the lead and gave it right back,” said KSC Coach Ken Howe.  “But this team is pretty resilient, responding right away with six more runs in the third.”

Senior Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.), Patnode, Doyon, and Morrill each had two hits for KSC (10-8).

Buinsma had three hits, including a home run and three RBIs for Curry (12-7)

Junior Dan Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched into the sixth inning to pick up the win (3-0).  He gave up six runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks.  Freshman Tim Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and junior Corey Vogt (Suffield, Conn.) pitched well in relief.  Vogt fanned six batters in his two innings of work on the mound.

Junior Chris Costa (Lynnfield, Mass.) was the losing pitcher for Curry.

Keene State returns home to play Amherst College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
