KEENE, N.H. 4/6/10 – The Keene State baseball team
ran out of innings and almost out of sunlight in an 11-8
non-conference loss to Amherst College at Owl Athletic Complex on
Tuesday afternoon.
The visiting Lord Jeffs (11-7) scored four runs in the top of
the fourth inning to go up 5-1. Sophomore John Wagner had a
key three-run triple.
Trailing 7-1, KSC got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth
on a two-run home run by junior Peter Burgio
(Bolton, Conn.). It was his first round-tripper of the
season. Junior Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) cut
the lead to 7-4 in the seventh with his team-leading fifth home run
of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
Amherst scored one run in the eighth and what proved to be three
valuable insurance runs in the ninth inning. Wagner delivered
a two-run single up the middle.
Keene State (10-9) made things interesting in the bottom of the
frame. With sunlight fading, junior Tyler
DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) drove in one run with a
single. KSC plated two more runs on an error and infield hit
to account for the final score.
Seniors Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.)
and Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) and DiPrato each had two hits for
the Owls.
Wagner finished the game with three hits and five RBIs for the
Lord Jeffs. Senior Will Lawton (Newton, Mass.) had three hits.
Junior Kyle Davis (Rochester, N.H.) (1-2)
started for KSC and took the loss.
Junior Jeff Keenan (West Hartford, Conn.) (1-2), who came on to
pitch in the fourth inning, got the win for Amherst.
Keene State is at Williams College on Wednesday.
Amherst College plays Williams on Friday.
