WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. 4/7/10 – The Keene
State College baseball team, came away with a 13-13 tie at Williams
College on Wednesday night. In a crazy turn of events, the Owls
scored three runs in the top of the 11th to take a 13-10 lead. In
the bottom half, KSC rightfielder Bobby Doyon (Keene,
N.H) made a diving catch on a fly ball from
Stephen Maier (Orange, Conn.) with one out and the
bases loaded, allowing the Eph's to tag-up the tying run. On
the same play, Williams went for the victory as catcher Cam
Susk (Woodside, Calif.) tried to score from second base on
the fly ball, but was gunned down at the plate to ensure the 13-13
tie. The game was called due to darkness.
“After we scored three runs in the top of the 11th the
umpires said that the bottom of the 11th would be the last half
inning no matter what,” said KSC head coach Ken
Howe. “It was pretty dark and hard to see the ball
so we got together and knew we had to call it.”
In the top half of the 11th the Owls (10-9-1), crossed the plate
three times to take the lead. Sophomore left fielder Cody
Callahan (Seekonk, Mass.) started the rally off with a
home run to right field to give KSC an 11-10 lead. After center
fielder Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) ripped an RBI
double scoring Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.), Doyon hit
a single up the middle to give the visitors a 13-10 lead.
Williams (9-8-1) answered back in the bottom half, led by
Susk's two RBI single through the left side of the infield,
to even the game at 13-13 before he was tagged out at the plate to
end the game.
The game would not have gotten that far had the Owls not tied
the game up in the top of the ninth. Callahan's RBI single,
scoring senior catcher Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury,
Conn.) evened the game at ten apiece.
Freshman reliever Tim Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks,
Conn.) pitched four scoreless innings, including the
bottom of the ninth, to keep the Owls in the game. Dan
Wogksch (Bethel, Conn.) pitched the bottom of the 11th,
allowing three runs on three hits and two walks in the no-decision.
The craziness began right off the bat, as the Owls jumped out to
a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cipolla, Kyle Morrill
(Auburn, N.H.), and Callahan each had RBI hits to pace the
KSC attack.
Keene State had 22 hits in the tie, with Doyon going 5 for 6
with a double, home run and two RBI. Callahan was 3 for 5 with a
double, homer and four runs batted in. Cipolla and Tyler
DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) both had three hits for the
Owls.
The Ephs had 18 hits, with Al Mathews
leading the way by hitting 4 for 6 with an RBI. Susk was 3 for 6
with five RBI, while Pat Barren was 3 for 4 with
three doubles and three runs scored.
The Owls return to action Saturday with a key LEC doubleheader
at Eastern Conn. State set to begin at noon.
