KEENE, N.H. 5/1/10 – Keene State College erupted for 24 runs
and 30 hits, including junior Bobby Doyon's (Keene,
N.H.) career record 29th home run, in a 12-10, 12-6 sweep
of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader
at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Keene State, winners of eight of its last nine games, improves to
23-13-1 (8-4 LEC) and moves into a tie for first with ECSU in
the Little East standings. Southern Maine falls to 17-16-1
and 6-5 in conference play.
KSC took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener on a
bases-clearing triple by senior Anthony Cipolla
(Glastonbury, Conn.).
After the Huskies scored five runs in the top of the fifth, KSC
answered with three runs in the bottom of the bottom of the fifth
and three more in the sixth to go up 9-5. Sophomore
Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) hit a three run home
run, his fifth of the season, in the sixth.
USM plated five runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead
10-9. But KSC came right back with three runs in the bottom
of the frame to go back on top 12-10. Doyon had a single up
the middle to tie the game and senior Keith Patnode (Keene,
N.H.) blasted a two-run home run, his sixth of the season,
to score the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning.
Junior Peter Burgio (Bolton, Conn.) had three hits
and Morrill finished with four RBIs to lead the Owls' 12-hit
attack.
Sophomore Anthony Pisani (Cheshire, Conn.) knocked in three runs
and junior Mike Eaton (Sabattus, Me.) had three hits and two RBIs
to lead USM.
Junior Corey Vogt (Suffield, Conn.), who pitched
the final two innings, allowing one hit and fanning two, picked up
the win. He is 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Dustin Stanton (Cornish, Me.), the fifth pitcher used by
USM, took the loss.
The Owls jumped on the Huskies early, scoring five runs in the
first and four more in the third to go up 10-1 in the second
game. The first inning featured a three-run home run by Doyon
and a two-run blast by Burgio.
Doyon's home run was his 10th of the season and 29th of his
career, putting him on top of Keene State all-time home run
list. “I've been thinking about the record, so it
was nice to get it done today,” said Doyon, who surpassed the
previous mark of 28 set by Greg Ford.
Sophomore Vinnie Ganz (Waterbury, Conn.), senior
Jesse Cahill (Cranston, R.I.) had RBI singles and
Doyon had a two-run single in the Owls' third inning.
Doyon finished the game with three hits and six RBIs. Junior
Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) had four hits from
the lead-off spot, and Cipolla chipped in with three hits for KSC
which had 18 hits in the nightcap.
Senior Colin Henry (Penobscot, Me.) had three hits and two RBIs for
the Huskies.
Junior Dan Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) improved
his record to 3-0 with the win. He pitched six innings,
giving up five runs on eight hits while fanning five.
Junior Ben Ives (Portland, Me.) was the losing pitcher for USM.
Keene State host Wheaton College on Sunday at noon.
