Owls shutout rival Panthers 4-0

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 10/1/11 – There were numerous bright moments for the Keene State College men's soccer team that posted a 4-0 Little East Conference shutout victory over rival Plymouth State University on a damp and dreary Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.

Keene State, which improves to 4-5-1 (2-1 LEC), found its offense, scoring the most goals in a game this season.  In addition, all four goals came from players who found the back of the net for the first time this fall.  "It's nice the see the ball go into the net," said KSC Coach Ron Butcher.  "We've been coming along the last four games.  I'm happy for the guys.  We've been working hard all year. This is the pay-off."

Keene State scored three of its goals in the first half.  The first two goals were set by up junior back Kyle Levitt (Plymouth, Mass.).  Leavitt sent in sophomore Bryce Lawlor (Woodbury, Conn.) with a short lead pass in the box to make it 1-0 at the 4:45 mark.  Seven minutes later, Leavitt crossed the ball to the weak side where junior Joe Senecal (Manchaug, Mass.) knocked the ball down and bent it into the far corner of the net to make it a 2-0 game. "Hopefully it's a good sign," said Senecal.  "If you work hard the goals will come."

Junior Danny Silverman (Maynard, Mass.) concluded the first half scoring when he put a rebound past Panther junior goalie Bjorn Ohlsson (Halmstad, Sweden).

Plymouth State (1-7, 0-2 LEC), which has lost its last three games, had a couple of quality scoring chances in the first half turned back by KSC freshman goalie Michael Ketterman (Monson, Mass.).  Alone in front, sophomore Jake Sjoberg (Linkoping, Sweden) tipped a pass in the box right into the hands of Ketterman who was at the right place at the right time to make the save.  Later in the half,  junior Park Spear's (Sodus Point, N.Y.) drive on a direct kick from 26-yards out was tipped over the cross bar by Ketterman.  "It felt great," said Ketterman, who made six saves for his first college shutout.  "I felt the defense was comfortable with me in the net today," he said.

Junior Nick Greenwood (Peterborough, Mass.) won a footrace to the ball and scored in the second half for the Owls' final goal.

Ohlsson, who stopped a break-in shot by Senecal with 4:50 to play, finished the game with seven saves.

Both teams had 18 shots while Keene State led 7-4 in corner kick chances.

Keene State host Salem State on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).  Plymouth State is off until next Saturday when it travels to Southern Maine for a noon LEC game.
