RPI Slips past Owls 2-1

Box Score

TROY, N.Y.  10/26/11 – The Keene State College men's soccer team saw its four game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 non-conference loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Renwyck Field in Troy, N.Y. on Wednesday.

Junior Zach Fane headed in a cross by senior Julian Coy at 58:20 of the second half for the Engineer's winning goal.

RPI improves to 7-5-4 overall, while the Owls slip to 9-7-1.

Rensselaer took a 1-0 lead with a late first half goal by junior Mike Birk at the 41:39 mark.

Sophomore Scott Douglas (East Greenwich, R.I) tied the game five minutes into the second half on a penalty kick. The Owls were awarded a penalty kick following a rough tackle in the box. Douglas – the team's leading scorer – made it count as he lined up and fired the ball into the low left corner to tie it up. It was his seventh goal in the last three games

The Engineers responded as Coy raced down the right side and saved the ball from going out of bounds. Spinning, he was able to cross it into the middle as Fane headed it in to the left side past the Owl senior keeper Paul Blackmer (Boylston, Mass.)

The RPI defense held solid over the final 30 minutes of play, limiting KSC  to just four shots in the frame and just one shot on goal in the game.

In goal, RPI rookie Rob Dewald posted his fourth win of the season and was not forced to make any saves in the game. For the Owls, sophomore Malcolm Cheney (Hopkinton, Mass.) made one save in the first half, before giving way to Blackmer. He suffered the loss to fall to 0-1-1 and did not have any stops.

The win also marked the third career victory over the Owls for RPI head coach Adam Clinton, who is 1987 graduate of Keene State. He is now 3-4-2 all-time against his alma mater.

Keene State also concludes its regular season on Saturday, hosting Western Connecticut State at 1p.m.
