Howe Earns 450th Win; Doyon Ties Steal Record in Owls 13-3 Win Over Chargers

KEENE, N.H. 4/27/11 – Keene State College baseball coach Ken Howe earned his 450th career victory in the Owl's 13-3 win over the Colby Sawyer Chargers on Wednesday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex. Also "stealing" a record, senior right fielder Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) stole two bases in the game, to give him 56 for his career, tying him with Jeff Perkins 09' in the Owls record book.

Howe, in his 25th season, has guided the Owls to at least 25 victories in six consecutive seasons after today's victory, improving KSC to 25-9 on the year. "In recent history we have been more successful but I'll never forget those kids I had play for me at the beginning," said Howe. "I've had some great players, assistant coaches and it's been a real pleasure."

With the loss the Chargers drop to 14-20 on the campaign.

Doyon's swipe of second base in the bottom of the fourth inning gave him 56 steals for his career and adds another record to the senior's ledger. "Bobby runs really well for a power hitter," said Howe. "He picks and chooses when to run at the right time and this is a real good accomplishment for him to add to his already impressive career."

Sophomore Kyle Underwood (Campton, N.H.) started the game on the mound for the Owls, going five innings allowing just one hit, one run and striking out two batters in the victory. "We were able to put up a crooked number in the bottom of the second," said junior Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) who finished the game a triple shy of the cycle. "It's always nice to give our pitcher an early lead and Underwood did the rest from there."

Morrill and junior Larry Longo (Londonderry, N.H.) each went deep for the Owls, while Morrill, sophomore Matt Topper (Hudson, N.H.) and freshman Matt Boulay (Stafford Springs, Conn.) each had doubles to help pace the Owls offense. Sophomore Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.) and senior Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.) each had three-hit performances for KSC in the win.

For Colby Sawyer, junior Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, Vt) and seniors Kevin Emerson (Hinesburg, Vt) and Evan Leary (Concord, N.H.) each tallied an RBI apiece in the losing effort.

Charger starter Ricky Perzentz (Westport, Mass.) only lasted an inning and a third allowing four earned runs and walking three batters to earn his first defeat of the season (3-1). Freshman PJ Singster (Sandown, N.H.) pitched well for the visitors, with three scoreless innings allowing only three hits in the middle innings for Colby Sawyer.

The Owls return to action tomorrow, with a road non-conference matchup against Brandeis at 3:30 p.m. Colby Sawyer starts their conference tournament (The Commonwealth Coast Conference) on Tuesday, May 3rd.
