Williams spoils Owls home baseball opener 17-4

KEENE, N.H.  4/6/11 – Williams College spoiled Keene State College's home baseball season opener, handing the Owls a 17-4 non-conference loss at Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

There were few highlights in the game for Keene State, which falls to 12-5.  Juniors Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.) and Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.), sophomore Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.), and freshman Vinnie Mangiagli (East Hartford, Conn.), who was seeing his first action of the season, each had two hits.

Williams, which finished the game with 18 hits, scored at least one run in the first five innings, going up 10-2. 

Junior Stephen Maier and Patrick Blizzard each knocked in three runs while senior James Allison had three hits for the Ephs (13-5).  Freshman Marco Hernandez belted a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Sophomore John Coughlin (Litchfield, N.H.) (0-1) had a tough outing for the Owls, lasing just 1.1 innings and giving up seven runs on six hits with one strikeout.  Five pitchers followed Coughlin to the mound.

Keene State hosts Framingham State on Thursday (3:30 p.m.).
