Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. 9/10/11 – In the first matchup of Keene State College and Wellesley University women's soccer since 1997, the Owls emerged victorious in a 2-0 shutout victory on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Classic.
The last time the Owls and the Blue squared off, Wellesley defeated KSC 3-2 in the first round of the ECAC Tournament.
"We played really well. It was a great team performance," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons. "The questions we had about certain positions are now being answered and we're starting to come together."
KSC cracked the scoreboard early in the second half, as junior midfielder Brittany Croteau (Swanzey, N.H.) ripped a shot from way outside the box that just dropped in over the goalie's head for the 1-0 lead.
At the 70:37 mark, sophomore forward Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) made a nice move around the defender and tucked the ball into the top right corner for the goal and a 2-0 road victory.
KSC outshot the Blue 27-12 on the game, but Wellesley held a slim margin in corner kicks at four-to-three.
Senior goaltender Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.) notched her second shutout of the season in just three games making six saves on the afternoon. Wellesley netminder S.J. Gray made 12 stops and allowed the two KSC goals in the losing effort.
Keene State returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, at 1 p.m. against Babson.
