Owls fall to Golden Bears 7-0

KEENE, N.H. 9/14/11 – The Keene State College men's soccer team suffered a 7-0 shutout loss to Western New England University at Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.  It was most goals given up by the Owls since 1994 when they lost to Gannon University 7-2.

Keene State (1-3-1), which has scored just two goals this season, continues to struggle offensively.  Winners of four straight, WNE improves to 6-1.

Sophomore Ryan Williams (Brewster, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist for the Golden Bears who scored three goals in first half and four more times in the second period.. Junior Bobby Jameson (Northbridge, Mass.) gave WNE a 1-0 lead at the 16:33 mark on a play that began on a free kick crossing ball deep in the left corner by senior Eric Marcelino (Farmington, Conn.).  Williams sent a shot into the box that sophomore Jake Bartnik (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tipped into the net to make it 2-0.  Williams scored on his own rebound to make it a 3-0 game at halftime.

Making his first start in goal for KSC, freshman Michael Ketterman (Monson, Mass.) made a couple of nice saves early in the second half, coming out to stop a shot by senior Corey Howard (Hopedale, Mass.) and making a diving one-handed save on a bid by Marcelino.

The Golden Bears continued on the offensive later in the half.  Freshman Chad Barrett (Lebanon, Conn.) knocked down a crossing ball from senior Austin Santolini (Agawam, Mass.) and put the ball in the net to make it 4-0.  Sophomore Mike Wysocki (Somers, Conn.) and Williams scored three minutes apart to make it 6-0. Wysocki's broke in alone for his goal and Williams'' goal was set up on a lead pass from junior Shawn DaCruz (Ludlow, Mass.).   Freshman Blake Heyn (Nottingham, N.H.) scored the Golden Bears final goal.

WNEC outshot KSC 20-13 and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams used two goalies.  Ketterman played the first 71:46 and made six saves. Senior Paul Blackmer (Boylston, Mass.) played the final 18:14 and wasn't credited with a save.   Sophomore Domenick Villano (Bronxville, N.Y.) started for WNEC and didn't record a save in 68:41 of action. Senior Sean Healey (Portland, Conn.) played the final 21:19 and made two saves.

Keene State plays its first Little East game of the season at UMass-Boston on Saturday. (1 p.m.) . The Golden Bears is at Bowdoin on Saturday (12 p.m.).
