Box Score KEENE, N.H. 9/21/11 – Michael Jacques won't soon forget his first college goal. The freshman forward from Tolland, Conn. buried a crossing ball from senior back Kevin Gomes (Halifax, Mass.) just 43 seconds in overtime to give the Keene State College men's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 non-conference win over Worcester State University at Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.
Gomes did the dirty work to set up the goal, racing down the right side of the field to deliver the pass. "I just ran it down and tried to put it in the box and Mike was there to put it into the net," said Gomes.
"I just knew I had to put it into the net. I knew I had to get it done quickly," said Jacques. "I think I remember this goal for a long time."
It was the first time the Owls (3-3-1) has scored more than one goal in a game this season and the first time the team has strung together two consecutive wins. Worcester State (2-3-1) saw its three game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Controlling play, Keene State had the best opportunity to get on the board in a scoreless first half. Set up in front at the left corner of the net, sophomore Bryce Lawlor (Naugatuck, Conn.) had his short-range shot stopped by Lancer senior goalie Evan Wilga (Dudley, Mass.).
The Owls kept the pressure up in the second half with sophomore Scott Douglas (East Greenwich, R.I.) and junior Joe Senecal (Manchaug, Mass.) getting their share of scoring chances. Douglas finally broke through with his first goal of the season at the 62:49 mark when he settled a pass from Lawlor and drove the ball into the back corner of the net.
Sophomore forward Alex Wolfel (Unionville, Conn.) tied the score seven minute later when dribbled to midfield and drilled a shot into the top of the net.
Douglas had a chance to get the go-ahead goal for KSC in the closing minutes. With 3:06 to play he broke in alone, but Wilga came out to make the save.
Keene State didn't waste any time in the overtime, gaining control of the ball at the whistle and putting the ball into the net. "We deserved that game, "said KSC Coach Ron Butcher. "I thought we played extremely well. We had a five minute lapse when they scored, but other than that we possessed the ball. The kids have been working hard the past five days, so they deserve this win."
Keene State outshot the Lancers 24-9 and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. KSC sophomore goalie Malcolm Cheney (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished the game with five saves. Wilga stopped 10 shots for Worcester State.
Keene State returns to Little East play on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) with a road game at Southern Maine. Worcester State has a home game against Framingham State on Saturday (10 a.m.).
