Berthiaume nets two as the Owls drop the Cougars 3-0

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. 9/21/11 – Sophomore forward Jessica Berthiaume's homecoming was a good one, as the Worcester, Mass. native netted two goals at Clark University in Keene State's 3-0 victory over the Cougars in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday night.

"We played well this afternoon," said KSC head coach Denise Lyons. "We are finally starting to get things together and be on the same page as a team and that is important as we hit the heart of our conference schedule."

The Owls, winners of three straight, improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 2-4-1 in 2011.

In KSC's five wins, they have outscored their opponents 11-0 thanks to the solid goaltending of senior netminder Megan Dempsey (E. Weymouth, Mass.). Dempsey earned her fifth shutout victory of the season by setting aside five shots against Clark.

Berthiaume, who netted KSC's only goal in Monday night's 1-0 victory over Castleton State, started the scoring early, just under 16 minutes into the match as she netted her third goal of the season to give the Owls the 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Sia Karamourtopolous (Fremont, N.H.) was credited with the assist.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Owls lead grew to 2-0 on an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Brittany Croteau (Swanzey, N.H.) at the 49:20 mark.

With Clark struggling to get on the board, KSC added a late goal, as Berthiaume scored at the 86:06 mark off an assist from junior midfielder Joan Hamel (Weare, N.H.) for the 3-0 shutout victory.

KSC outshot the Cougars 18-11 on the match, with 12 of the Owl's shots coming in the second stanza. Each team finished the contest with two corners.

Cougar's netminder Audrey Eisemann (Worcester, Mass.) stopped seven shots and allowed three goals in the losing effort.

Keene State returns home Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as the Owls will take on LEC rival Southern Maine at Owl Athletic Complex. Clark travels to Wheaton (Mass.) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. start.
