Box Score CASTLESTON, VT. 10/4/12 – The Keene State College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games, edging Castleton State 2-1 in a non-conference game played in Castleton, Vt. on Thursday.
"It was a very physical game, but we settled down in the second half," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons. "It was a very tight game right up to the end."
The Owls (8-5) struck first getting on the board on a goal by junior Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, R.I.). The fleet-footed forward has scored six goals in the last three games for KSC.
The Spartans (7-3-1), who were undefeated (6-0-1) in their last seven games, tied the game in the final minute of the first half on a goal by freshman Mallory Costello (Vernon, N.J.)
Sophomore Beverly Cole (Madbury, N.H.) got the game-winner for the Owls a couple of minutes into the second half. Cole drilled the ball past a scrum of players in front of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Owls' defense took over from there, getting in front of through and crossing balls and not allowing the Spartans a quality shot on net.
Keene State had a slight 17-14 edge in shots. Both teams had six corner kick chances.
Sophomore Torrie Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) finished the game with six saves for the Owls. Freshman Kaleigh Newton (Morrisville, Vt.) stopped three shots for Castleton.
Keene State travels to Eastern Conn. on Saturday for a key Little East game against the Warriors, who are tied with UMass-Boston and UMass-Dartmouth for the top sport in the conference standings.
