Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/9/12 – Juniors Scott Douglas (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Brian Swindell (Milford, Mass.) each netted two goals to lead the Keene State College men's soccer team to a 5-1 non-conference win over Gordon College on Tuesday.
Registering their first win in five games, the Owls improve to 7-5-1. Gordon College (4-8-1) has dropped two of its last three games.
Senior sweeper Blake Nyman (Plymouth, Mass.) kept it a scoreless game in the early going when he got in between a two-on-one breakout by Gordon sophomore Alek Duba (Bristol, N.H.) and junior Andrew Vandervoort (Memphis, Tenn.).
Both teams scored late first half goals. After Douglas hit the cross bar with a shot, Swindell headed home his first goal of the game to give KSC a 1-0 lead at the 42:51 mark.
Sophomore Andrew Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.) tied the score two minutes later he connected on a direct kick.
Taking the play to the Fighting Scots in the second half, the Owls went up 2-1 three minutes into the half. Dribbling in from the left side, senior Joe Senecal (Manchaug, Mass.) drilled a shot off the post. Douglas deposited the ball into the open net.
After being pulled down in the box, Douglas scored his second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game.
Sending the ball through a maze of players in front of the net, Swindell got his second goal of the game and his fourth of the season to give KSC a 4-1 lead. "The last few games I've been in a slump, but I had the right mindset tonight," said Swindell. "My teammates gave me some great balls that I was able to turn into goals."
Inserted into the line-up a minute earlier, freshman Fenton McCall (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his first college goal, tipping in a cross from sophomore Yazid Eideh (Haverhill, Mass.) for the Owls' final goal. "It was a good goal for the first one," said McCall. "It feels awesome. Go in for a minute and get it done."
Getting the start in goal for KSC, sophomore Mike Ketterman (Monson, Mass.) made his best stop of the night in the closing seconds of the game, making a diving save on a bid by sophomore Elton Chingapa (Lilonhwe, Malawi) with 45 second to go. Ketterman finished the game with seven saves.
Junior Tim Hardy (Gorham, Me.) stopped six shots for the Fighting Scots.
Keene State hosts Rhode Island College in an LEC showdown under the lights on Saturday (6 p.m.).
