Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 4/11/12 – Posting its share of double-digit wins this season, the Keene State College baseball team had the tables turned on them Wednesday, dropping a 14-1 non-conference baseball game to Western New England University at Trelease Park in Springfield, Mass.
The Owls (18-7), ranked fifth in New England, entered the game having won 11 of its last 12 contests.
Keene State, which finished the game with seven hits, got its only run in the fifth. Sophomore Matt Boulay (Stafford Springs, Conn.) got on base and advanced to second on errors. He moved to third on a fly out and came home on a RBI ground out from senior Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.), tying the game 1-1.
The Golden Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Taylor Perun (Plainville, Conn.) knocked in a pair of runs with a single and senior Tyler Issadore (Hingham, Mass.) had a two-run double.
Western New England added a pair of runs in the seventh and seven more in the eight to break the game open.
Senior center fielder Kyle Morrill (Auburn, NH) had two of the Owls' seven hits.
Junior Mike Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) pitched six strong innings and Western New England banged out 17 hits in the game.
The bottom half of the WNE lineup (six through eight) came through with an impressive showing Perun, junior shortstop Kyle McKelvey (Schenectady, NY), and Issadore each collected three hits while combining for eight RBI and five runs scored.
Lospinuso gave up just five hits with a walk and two strikeouts to improve his record to 2-1.
KSC Junior pitcher John Coughlin (Litchfield, NH) lasted only five-and-two-third innings in suffering his first loss (2-1) in three decisions. He gave up seven hits and five runs (four earned) with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Owls return home on Thursday for a non-conference game against Westfield State (3:30 p.m.).
