Pride edge Owls 2-1; Banas nets first college goal

Box Score

KEENE, N.H 10/22/13  - Junior Drew Sommer's (West Chester, Pa.) goal with 11:41 to play gave Springfield College a 2-1 victory over Keene State College in non-conference men's soccer action at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.  It's the first time since 1989 that Springfield (12-3) has posted a road win against the Owls (5-10).

Keene State jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 33:40 mark of the first half.  Springfield junior goalie Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) made the initial save on a shot by junior Michael Jacques (Tolland, Conn.), but classmate Nate Banas (Monson, Mass.), who moved up front due to injuries, was Johnny-on-the-spot to knock in the rebound for his first career goal.

KSC junior back Pat Anthony (Southampton, Mass.) momentarily kept the Pride off the board when he slid across and blocked a shot by senior Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) with KSC junior goalie Mike Ketterman (Monson, Mass.) out of position.  However, seconds later, Springfield tied the game on a short-corner goal by senior Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.).

Anthony came up big again for the Owls in the opening minute of the second half when he blocked a shot by Pride senior Scott Saucier (Derry, N.H.).

Springfield took advantage of a misplay in the Owls backfield to get the go ahead goal with 11:41 to go.  Sommer got the ball away from a KSC defender and beat Ketterman with a shot to the far corner for the game-winner.

Looking to get the equalizer with 3:43 to play, KSC sophomores Scott Dietz (Woodlands, Conn.) and Matt Langford (East Longmeadow, Mass.) fired consecutive shots on goal.  Freshman goalie Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) stopped the bid by Dietz and Langford's drive hit off the crossbar.

Keene State had a slim 23-21 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin in corner opportunities.

Ketterman finished the game with eight saves.  Schmid started in goal for the Pride and made six saves.  Richard played the final 29:13 and stopped four shots.

Keene State plays its final home regular season game of the season against Western Conn. on Saturday (1 p.m.).  Winners of eight of its last nine games, Springfield host MIT on Saturday (1 p.m.).
