XARA Classic: Second half surge lifts Hobart over Owls 3-0

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 9/1/13 – Brandeis University and Hobart (N.Y.) College posted wins in the second day of action at the XARA men's soccer classic at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday.

Hobart (1-1) broke open a scoreless game with three answered goals in the second half   to record a 3-0 shutout victory over host Keene State (0-2) in the second game. Senor Kyle Feather (Pinebrook, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal late in the second half as Brandeis (2-0) held off Rowan (N.J.)  (1-1) 2-1 in the first game of the day.

Hobart took it to the Owls in the opening minutes of the game. KSC senior goalie Malcolm Cheney (Hopkinton, Mass.) kept the Statesmen off the board when he got a hand on a shot by freshman JP White (Falmouth, Me.). Later in the half, Cheney came charging out of his net and robbed freshman Carl Weiss (Manlius, N.Y.).

Hobart broke the scoreless tie at the 30:10 mark of the second half.  Sophomore Marco Ronning (Stockholm, Sweden) sent a cross over to freshman Charlie Kelly (Liverpool, England) who flicked the ball into the far corner of the net.

Minutes later, KSC junior Michael Jacques (Tolland, Conn.) broke in looking for the equalizer, but his shot sailed just wide of the net.

Cheney kept it a one goal game with a diving save ticketed for the corner of the net by sophomore Jacob Fox (Kansas City, Mo.) with 16:37 to go.

Hobart got a key insurance goal with 8:42 to go.  A KSC defender was looking to clear the ball.  The ball deflected off of sophomore Kyle Wiatrowski (Lancaster, N.Y.) and into the net to give Hobart a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore TJ Kaszubski (Amherst, N.Y.) made it a 3-0 game two minutes later when he deflected a pass from senior Kaegan Kelly (Watertown, Mass.) past Cheney.

We were tied in the first half and lucky to go in -0-0," said Cheney.  "We had our chances in the second half, but things got a ways from us and we just gout unlucky in the first two goals. We have a big game against Wheaton on Saturday and we'll be able to regroup."

"I just thought the heat got to us in the second half.  The two quick goals took the wind out of our sails and everything went down him from there," said senior Pat Anthony (Southampton, Mass.).  We're definitely going to improve.  This is a good tournament to start for us.  It gave us a chance to see how better teams play, so we'll be ready for out conference games when they come up."

Hobart outshot the Owls 21-10.  Cheney finished the game with seven saves for KSC.  Sophomore Tyler Serafine stopped two shots to post the shutout in goal for the Statesmen.

Keene State is at Wheaton College next Saturday (7 p.m.).

Brandeis 2   Rowan 1:  Brandeis took a 1-0 lead at the 25:18 mark of the first half when junior Michael Soboff (Framingham, Mass.), who just entered the game, put his rebound past Rowan senior goalie Ryan Gill (West Deptford, N.J.).

Rowan didn't have a shot on goal in the first half.

Senior Sam Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a chance to extend the Judges' lead at the 37:05 mark of the second half, but his point-blank shot was stopped by Gill. Minutes later, Soboff's bid just went wide of the far post.

Rowan had an opportunity to score on a free kick play, but freshman Vinny Ignatowicz (Toms River, N.J.) couldn't connect on a header at the right corner of the net.

Brandeis threatened to add to it lead with 7:20 to go, but Gill was up to the challenge, stopping the first shot by Soboff and getting his hand on the rebound by junior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass.).

The Judges finally added an insurance goal with 3:46 to go.  Set up in front by Ocel, Feather made it 2-0.

Rowan cut the Judges' lead in half less than a minute later.  Ignatowicz headed the ball over to junior Christian Fountain (Fredicksburg, Va.) one-timed it into the net.

The Judges outshot the Rowan 9-2.  Junior Joe Gaffy (Concord, N.H.) finished the game with one saves for Brandies.  Gill stopped seven shots for Rowan.
