Baseball Wraps Up Florida Trip Against Union

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--A spirited comeback fell just short as the Keene State College baseball team concluded their trip to Florida with a 5-4 loss to Union College (N.Y.) on Saturday.

The Owls (4-6) used two runs in the ninth to get within one, and had the winning run in scoring position but could not quite complete the rally against Union closer Chris Pignatello.

The Dutchmen (1-0) scored in each of the first two innings to take an early 3-0 lead.  David Peretti hit a 2-RBI double in the first, and Anders Goetz singled home Chris Carbone in the second.  Union tacked on another run in the fifth when Vincent Esposito singled, stole second and third, and came home on Sam Caruso's sacrifice fly, and grabbed a fifth run in the sixth inning on Joe Bradlee's RBI double.
Keene State struggled against Union starter Jake Fishman, who retired the first six Owls to face him and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning.  The Owls did get on scoreboard in the top of the seventh as Brett Dootson hit his second career home run, down the left field line.  KSC made it 5-2 in the eighth. An error allowed Andy Johnson to reach base and move all the way to third, and Cody Dube's infield hit brought him home.
The Owls' final chance in the ninth began when Dootson reached via being hit by a pitch, and Tanner Chase doubled to put two runners in scoring position with none out.  Union brought in Pignatello, but he uncorked a wild pitch to bring in Dootson.  After Billy Hartmann drew a walk, Chase lofted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Chase and make it a one run game.
Johnson followed with a single to move Hartmann up 90 feet.  Nick Vita hit into a fielder's choice that cut down Johnson, but Hartmann, representing the tying run, moved up to third, and Vita stole second, but the rally ended when Andrew Gummow grounded out to shortstop to end the game.
Shawn Egan made his second start of the year and went 4.1 innings, allowing four runs.  Vinnie Mangiagli allowed one run and one hit in 2.2 innings of work, and Alex Fiste pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
The Owls return to New England, and are scheduled to host Amherst College on Wednesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m.
