12 Hit Attack Leads Keene State Baseball to Split With Rhode Island College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KEENE, N.H.--Andrew Gummow, Ian Seawards, and Brett Dootson each knocked in a pair of runs in the opener as the Keene State College baseball team earned a split of a Little East Conference doubleheader with Rhode Island College on Saturday.  The Owls took the opener 10-4, before dropping the second game 4-0.

Keene State is now 6-11 overall, and 1-3 in the LEC, while Rhode Island College is 9-13, and 2-4 in the Little East Conference.  KSC returns to the field tomorrow, traveling to Western Connecticut State in a makeup doubleheader from April 2.  The Anchormen will host UMass-Dartmouth in an LEC contest at 3:30 on April 15.

Game One

KSC jumped on RIC starter C.J. Tsoumakas early, scoring a pair of first inning runs.  Joe Libby battled a long at bat before coming up with a leadoff single to center field, and moved to third on Nick Vita's one-out double.  After Cody Dube popped up to second, Gummow stroked a single to center field to plate both runs.

The Owls increased their advantage to 6-0 with a four run third inning.  Vita led off with a double to right-center, and scored on one of Rhode Island College's five errors.  Dube singled and took second on the same error, and after Gummow was plunked by Tsoumakas, the runners moved up in Seawards' sacrifice bunt.

Dootson brought in both Dube and Gummow with a double to left-center.  Matt Boulay popped up to short, but Billy Hartman followed with a walk and scored on Libby's left field single.

The Anchormen cut into the lead in the top of the fourth, with Tyler Santaniello providing a 2-RBI double to right-center to bring in Angelo St. Laurent and Justin Rainville.  RIC made it a 6-4 game in the fifth inning when Matt Foley drove in Dean Beshansky and Justin Costa, but KSC put an end to any rally by scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning.

Gummow reached base via a free pass, and scored all the way from first on Seawards' double, and an error by RIC's third baseman allowed Seawards to score.  Matt Boulay had reached on the error and also came around on Hartmann's single to left.

The Owls added one more in the eighth when Vita reached on an error and scored on Seawards' seeing-eye single through the left side.

Shawn Egan started and pitched 4.1 innings for the Owls.  Mike Crimi picked up the win with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief, and Jeff Lunn recorded his first career save by throwing the final two innings.

Tsoumakas allowed nine runs, six of them earned, in 4.1 innings of work.  Brad Van Fechtmann allowed one unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Game Two

The Owl bats were silenced by Rhode Island College starter Kyle Morvan in the nightcap.  KSC was limited to six hits, including four through the first seven innings as Morvan struck out four in a complete game.

The Anchormen got the only run they would need in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice by St. Laurent.

Tanner Chase had a two-out single in the bottom of the first for Keene State, but was retired on a 6-4-3 double play. Morvan would not allow another hit until Cody Dube doubled in the fourth inning, but he was left stranded when Gummow struck out swimming.

RIC touched KSC starter Stephen Costello for another two runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Tyler Rains and a bases loaded walk from Foley.

Keith Simpson relieved and threw 4.1 innings of five hit ball, with two strikeouts.  Zach Walker held RIC hitless for the final three innings.

The Owls' best chance to get back in the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning, as consecutive singles from Hartmann and Libby put a runner in scoring position.  Morvan got out of the jam by getting Chase to hit into a fielder's choice and Vita to fly out to left field.
