Baseball Snaps Skid With 8-4 Win Over Western New England

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Joe Libby batted 2-for-5 with three RBI as the Keene State College baseball team ended a six game losing streak with an 8-4 victory over Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Owls pick up their first victory since a 2-1 win over the same Western New England team on March 20, during the Spring Break trip to Florida.  Western New England falls to 8-13.

Libby got the Owls going from the outset.  The sophomore led off the game with a double to left field, and moved to third on Tanner Chase's groundout.  Nick Vita brought Libby home with a groundout to second base.

The Owl bats came alive in the second inning.  Andrew Gummow started the frame with a single to right center, and took second when Ian Seawards was hit by a pitch.  After a groundout moved up both runners, Matt Boulay was intentionally walked to loaded the bases.  Billy Hartmann drew a walk to bring in KSC's second run, and Libby cleared the bases with a triple to make it 5-0.  Chase knocked in his second run of the day with an RBI groundout to shortstop, scoring Libby.

Western New England got back in the game with two runs in the fourth on a 2-RBI single by Kevin Marciano, and added two more in the sixth innning with Taylor Searles driving in a run and Marciano adding a sacrifice fly.

Keene State got a pair of late runs to seal the win in the ninth.  Consecutive singles by Chase and Vita and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out, and Cody Dube was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Gummow was also hit by a pitch to bring in one run, and Seawards lined a sacrifice fly to right to make it 8-4.

Nate Pedersen picked up the win with an inning of hitless relief for KSC. Gummow finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Boulay also notched a pair of hits.

KSC returns to action by making their long awaited home debut with a Little East Conference doubleheader against Rhode Island College at noon.  Western New England gets back on the field tomorrow, traveling to Brandeis with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
