Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Maurice Young's goal 1:36 into overtime proved to be the difference as Western New England University edged visiting Keene State College 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (4-2), who reached the second round of the NCAA tournament a year ago, took the lead in the 17th minute when Kory Caster scored off a pass from Ryan Dickinson.
KSC equalized in the 28th minute - Promise Kpee sent in a low cross that Eddie Mercer connected on a first-time finish for his first goal in 2014.
The game remained tied at halftime, and after the break, the Owls poured on the pressure as Kpee and Conor Leahy forced saves out of WNE goalie Kevin Strobel within the first 10 minutes of the frame.
The post came to Keene State's rescue in the 84th minute when Scott Trautwein's header cannoned back off it for the Golden Bears, while KSC's Matt Langford planted a header just wide of the mark with 12 seconds left on the clock.
Western New England won the game 96 seconds into overtime when Young scored hist first collegiate goal.
Jacob Walker made his first start of the season and played the first half, making one save. Mike Ketterman played the second half and overtime, making three stops. WNE goalie Strobel made eight stops as Owls outshot the Golden Bears 21-13.
Keene State is off for a week, until the Owls travel to Worcester State for a 7 p.m. start on September 17. Western New England hosts Eastern Nazarene in The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener on September 13 at 11 a.m.
