Late Goal Boosts Keene State Past Plymouth State in LEC Opener

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Shannon Summers scored the only goal of the game with 10:32 left remaining to give Keene State College a 1-0 win over Plymouth State University on Saturday in the Little East Conference opener for both teams at Owl Athletic Complex.

Keene State has now won three in a row, and is 5-3, and 1-0 in the LEC.  Plymouth State dips to 1-3, and 0-1 in the LEC.  It was the 19th straight time KSC has beaten in-state rival PSU.

The loss spoiled a fantastic effort in goal by the Panthers' Annaliese Schmidt.  The sophomore made 11 saves, keeping KSC off the board until Summers' decisive moment in the 80th minute.

Until then, the Owls could not get past Schmidt, who made a series of finger-tip saves to keep the scored at 0-0.  Beverly Cole's close range effort in the 53rd minute was tipped over the bar, as was Taylor Farland's header two minutes later.

The Owls continued to push for the go-ahead goal, as Maggie Grayson's header was wide of the mark off a corner kick, and Rebecca Costello saw her shot saved by Schmidt in the 78th minute.

Summers scored the only goal KSC would need just two minutes later, latching on to a loose ball in the box and beating Schmidt at the far post for her third goal of the season and second in as many games.

KSC dominated offensively, outshooting the Panthers 25-2 and taking 12 corner kicks to none for PSU.  Torrie Crenson made two stops in net for the Owls.

KSC heads back out of conference for a game against Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, September 24, at 6:30 p.m.  Plymouth State travels to Worcester State for a 7 p.m. kick-off on the same date.
