Men's Soccer Comes Back To Defeat Colonials On Senior Day

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Eddie Mercer headed in the game winning goal with 1:45 remaining in the first overtime to give the Keene State College men's soccer team a dramatic 2-1 win over Western Connecticut State University at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

KSC ends a four game losing streak and closes out the season a 5-11, and 2-5 in the LEC.  The Colonials end the year at 6-8-2, and 1-5-1 in LEC play.

A hard, physical contest that featured seven bookings saw the Owls dominate in shots on goal, but not  the scoreboard until the very end of the game.

Senior Ben Reif, one of seven honored on the day, nearly got the Owls on the board just 35 seconds into the contest, but WCSU goalie Austin Tierney dived to make the save.  Tierney would come up with an even better save two minutes later, leaping to his right to push away Riley Steele's goalbound effort.

Despite outshooting Western Connecticut State 6-1 in the first half, the Owls fell behind in the 39th minute when Phil Dagostino hooked home from close range past KSC goalie Mark Keller.

The Owls pressed for an equalizer in the second half, and the game remained at 1-0 when Jacob Walker, on in relief, made a save on Shane Bierfeldt in the 58th minute.

KSC played the final 13 minutes of regulation up a man when the Colonials' Chris Jeffrey received a straight red card.

Mercer drew KSC level with six minutes to go, picking up the ball from Western Connecticut State and blasting his fifth goal of the season past Tierney.

In overtime, the Colonials had the first chance, but Chauncey Allers headede wide.  At the other end of the field, Aidan Dean drew a foul approximately 30 yards from the goal on the right side.

Senior Brett Sullivan whipped in the resulting free kick, and Mercer rose highest to head past Tierney and send the sidelines into elation.

Keene State finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots; Keller did not make a save in the first half, while Walker, who earned his first career win at Keene State, made three in the second half and overtime.  Tierney made 11 saves for the Colonials.

Before the game, seniors Sullivan, Mercer, Walker, Keller, Reif, Matt Langford, and Dylan Bisceglia were honored for their contributions to the program.
