Women's Soccer Bounces UMass Dartmouth To Move On To LEC Semifinals

Box Score

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.--Taylor Farland's stunning goal with 13 minutes remaining gave the No. 5 seeded Keene State College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed UMass Dartmouth in the Little East Conference quarterfinals at Cressey Field on Tuesday night.

Keene State (10-6-4) advances to the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. where they will take on top seeded Eastern Connecticut State.   The two-time defending tournament champions eliminated UMass Dartmouth (7-7-2) at this stage for the second straight year, after last year's 4-0 win in Keene.

The game was short of chances for both teams until Farland's moment of magic arrived; the sophomore controlled the ball, and from about 50 yards out, looped the ball over UMD goalie Madison Boucher and into the net for her ninth of the season.

Keene State was outshot by the Corsairs 6-5, but none of UMass Dartmouth's shots were on goal, and junior goalie Danielle Warhall did not have to make a save.  The win avenged a 4-3 overtime loss to UMass Dartmouth on October 17.

It marked only the fourth time in LEC history that No. 5 seed has won a game in the LEC tournament; Plymouth State did so in 2001, as did Rhode Island College in 2002.  Eastern Connecticut State reached the LEC title game as the No. 5 seed before falling to Keene State in 2013.   Last season, the Owls eliminated No. 2 seed Western Connecticut State and top seed UMass Boston on penalty kicks.
