Women's Soccer Clipped By Cardinals In Season Opener

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Two goals in an eight minute span lifted the State University of New York at Plattsburgh to a 5-2 win over Keene State College in non-conference women's soccer action at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Keene State started brightly, and could have scored at least three goals in the first 15 minutes.  Shannon Summers had a goal ruled out for offsides in the 10th minute, and just a minute later, Brittany Tolla hit the post.  Tolla also shot wide in the 14th minute.

The Owls did make the breakthrough in the 19th minute when Tolla was hacked down in the box on a breakaway by Plattsburgh 'keeper Nicole Gibson.  Kali Santino made no mistake from the penalty spot, scoring her first collegiate goal past the reach of Gibson to the left.

The Cardinals were level in the 24th minute, when a defensive clearance from Keene State landed at the feet of Cassidy Clavet, who fired a shot from the edge of the area past KSC goalie Dani Warhall.

It remained 1-1 at halftime, but the Owls started strongly again in the second half, when Summers hit the post in the 54th minute.  SUNY Plattsburgh went back in front on a goal from Hannah Saccoccio in the 62nd minute, but Keene State tied it up 10 minutes later, when Taylor Farland latched on to a through ball from Natalie Roca, and her effort on net squirted through Gibson's arms to tie the score.

The tie lasted just 15 seconds, as Sarah Haight netted the game winner with a rocket from 20 yards out, and Caitlin Gagen and Clavet added a goal each in the final 10 minutes.

Gibson finished with five saves in net for the Cardinals, while Warhall made four stops for KSC.

KSC remains at home to host Endicott on Saturday, September 5 at 3:30.  SUNY Plattsburgh faces St. Lawrence in the North Country Classic on the same day.
