Mercer's Brace Sends KSC Past Southern Maine

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine--Eddie Mercer scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Keene State College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.

KSC has won two straight after a season opening four game losing streak.  The Huskies fall to 1-5-1.  It was the Little East Conference opener for both teams.

Despite holding a 30-6 advantage in shots, the Owls could not find a way past USM goalie Simon Hulbert until the 60th minute, when Mercer's shot snuck under Hulbert for his second goal of the year.

Mercer doubled the advantage eight minutes later, scoring from the spot after Jacob Blueglass was taken down in the penalty area.  The senior had a chance to complete the hat-trick in the 80th minute when Hulbert received a red card, but Mercer's second penalty of the game was saved by new keeper Ian Byron.

Hulbert finished with 11 saves, while Byron made three in a relief appearance.  Mark Keller picked up the win by making two saves.

Keene State returns home to host Green Mountain College on Thursday, September 24, at 6 p.m.  USM is off until next Saturday, traveling to UMass Boston at 5 p.m.
