Women's Soccer Opens LEC Play With 7-0 Shutout of Southern Maine

Box Score

KEENE, N.H.--Ellen Granata and Taylor Farland each scored a pair of goals as the Keene State College women's soccer team began Little East Conference competition with a 7-0 win over the visiting University of Southern Maine on Saturday at Owl Athletic Complex.

The Owls, unbeaten in their last three, improve to 3-2-1, and 1-0 in LEC play.  The Huskies fall to 2-3, and 0-1 in the LEC.

KSC held a 31-4 advantage in shots, and were never really threatened, scoring three times in the first 12 minutes of the game.

Farland fired the Owls into a lead 62 seconds into the game off a pass from Kali Santino, and scored her second in the 10th minute, tapping in Brittany Tolla's low feed across the face of goal.  Tolla got in on the goal scoring action, taking a through ball from Patricia Norton in the 12th minute for a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies forced a save out of KSC starter Danielle Warhall in the 20th minute from Sarah Michaud, but the Owls made it 4-0 before the half when Tyrah Urie set up Katie Silegy for her second goal in as many games.

The second half began just as the first did, with a goal on the very early minutes.  Granata was the scorer this time, finishing off a rebound from Shannon Summers.   The two seniors combined again in the 56th minute, with a 1-2 combination that allowed Granata to complete the brace.

Freshman Shannon Denault added a seventh goal for KSC, with an unassisted tally in the 64th minute.

The 7-0 win represents the biggest margin of victory for the Owls over Southern Maine.  KSC is 19-1-1 all-time against the Huskies, and has shutout USM in the last six games.

Warhall played the first half and made one save.  Kathryn Hoar made her first appearance of the season by playing the second half and also made one stop.

KSC will travel to Johnson & Wales for a non-conference matchup on September 23 at 5 p.m.  Southern Maine will also head to Rhode Island, playing Salve Regina on September 24 at 3:30 pm.
