Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - The Keene State men's soccer program battled the No. 12/13 UMass Boston Beacons to a 1-1 double overtime draw in a Little East Conference (LEC) regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.

Records

  • UMass Boston: 15-1-2, 5-1-1 LEC
  • Keene State: 8-8-2, 3-3-1 LEC

Next Up

  • Keene State narrowly missed the LEC tournament and will finish the 2016 campaign in sixth place in the LEC standings. To make the LEC tournament, the Owls needed a win over the Beacons, as well as losses from Western Connecticut and UMass Dartmouth. Although the Corsairs fell to Plymouth State, the Colonials were victorious over Southern Maine and the Owls finished with a tie.
  • UMass Boston earned the No. 1 seed in the LEC and will host No. 4 Eastern Connecticut at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2nd.

Tale of the Tape

  • Promise Kpee tallied his 17th goal of the season to become the leading goal scorer in the LEC to close out the regular season.
  • UMass Boston outshot the Owls by a demanding 21-8 and held a 15-7 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Owls' goalkeeper Jason Smith stopped seven over the 110 minutes, while Aidan Carter saved one apiece during the first two stanzas.

First Half Highlights

  • Both teams came out defensively strong in the opening minutes, before William Salta's shot from the top of the box was blocked to force a Keene State corner kick. The service from Chiza in the eighth minute towards the left post led to a header shot from Dale Dubinsky that was scooped up by Carter.
  • Mohamed Kenway used his speed in the 20th and 25th minutes to produce quality goal scoring opportunities, but both shots from the left side of the box went wide right.
  • After a strong defensive effort from Keene in the remaining minutes, UMass Boston forced two corner kicks, but both chances were stopped by a combination of the Owls defense and Smith, as the two teams went into halftime tied at zero.

Second Half and Overtime Highlights

  • In the 68th minute, Samuel Binogono, Glenn Smith and Kpee produced quality passing between each other at the top of the box that kept the Owls with possession, as the three inched closer towards the goal, before Smith collected a pass and surged towards the goal, but was tripped up in the box. Kpee stepped up to take the penalty kick and capatilized on the opportunity, placing the ball to the left of Carter, and putting the Owls up one.
  • The Beacons were quick to strike back, as Kenway's corner kick aimed towards the right post bobbled around in the box before it found the feet of Rafeal DeSouza, who fed the ball to Pedro De Carvalho. The defender tucked the ball under the cross bar and past Smith to equalize the game less than two minutes later.
  • Both teams were defensively strong in the remaining minutes, as neither team was able to find an opportunity to place the ball in the back of the net
