Men's Soccer Overpowers Wheaton in 6-1 Win

KEENE, N.H. - A hat trick from junior Promise Kpee and a strong offensive showing from the Owls propelled the Keene State men's soccer program to a 6-1 win over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.

Tale of the Tape 

  • Keene State held a slight 15-12 margin over Wheaton on shots, while the Lyons edged the Owls slightly in corner kicks, five to four. 
  • Junior Jason Smith finished the contest with three stops and sophomore Patrick Whelan collected one, while James Bailey made only one stop to Erik Wisniewski's zero. 
  • Keene State now has 15 goals on the season in three games, already half of what was scored for the Owls in the entire 2015 season, and did not allow a goal in 226 minutes to begin the season. 

First Half Highlights

  • The Owls opened scoring in the fourth minute, as junior Riley Steele found freshman Glenn Smith in the middle of the box, as Smith fired into the back of the net. 
  • Keene State would strike just three minutes later, as Kpee placed a pass to the feet of Smith, who found the net for the second time of the game, and increased the lead early in the first half. 
  • An effort by Roni Diniz in the ninth minute aimed to shut down the Owl's momentum, but the shot was stopped by Smith. 
  • In the 10th minute, Kpee collected a goal of his own, after out running the back line to make it 3-0, Keene State. 
  • Kpee netted his second goal of the game after hitting a penalty kick, awarded to Keene State in the 32nd minute, high into the left-side netting. 
  • Only thirty seconds later, sophomore Samuel Binogono capped off the scoring for the first half, as he hit the fifth-straight goal for the Owls with an unassisted effort late in the 32nd minute. 

Second Half Highlights  

  • Wheaton's lone goal was scored by Diniz, who carried the ball to the goal early in the 47th minute.  
  • In the 56th minute, Kpee collected the ball in the final third and brought it down the left side of the field, sprinting past the final defenders and into the box, launching the ball into the net for his third goal of the game. 
  • The Lyons had a chance to decrease the difference in the 82nd minute, but it was not enough, as a shot by Louis Chavez hit the crossbar.
