Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss Of The Season Against Western Connecticut State

DANBURY, C.T. - The Keene State men's soccer program suffered its first setback of the 2016 season, 2-0, against conference opponent Western Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon.

Tale of the Tape 

  • The Owls' 4-1 start on the season is the best start since the 2006 season. 
  • The two teams now hold a recent series over the past five years of 4-1, with Keene State leading over Western Connecticut State. 
  • The Owls outshot the Colonials 15-10, while the two teams held an even 3-3 margin in corner kicks. 

First Half Highlights 

  • In the 10th minute, Darian Richeme chipped a ball from Shane Pugliese over the head of a diving Jason Smith and into the back of the net to put the Colonials up one early.
  • Keene State had an opportunity to score a minute later, but Promise Kpee's shot was saved by Luca DiCarlo. 
  • Within the 23rd and 24th minute, each team created chances to find the back of the net, but Conor Leahy's header was saved by DiCarlo and Robert Della Penna's shot was saved by Smith. 

Second Half Highlights 

  • The Owls had a pair of quality scoring chances in the 54th and 58th minute after the hosts committed a pair of fouls just outside their own box, but the shots from Kpee and William Salta were both high.
  • The Colonials' sealed their 2-0 win in the 70th minute when Richeme fired a shot into the back of the net off of a feed from Shane Bierfeldt. 
  • Keene State had an opportunity to get one of their own in the 80th minute, but a strong defensive effort from Western Connecticut State kept the Owls from getting on the scoreboard.
