Men's Soccer Battles With Western New England In 4-3 Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Although three Owls scored in the contest, the Keene State men's soccer program was edged by two goals from Western New England (WNE) with 6:54 remaining in regulation on Wednesday afternoon at Suprenant Field.

Tale of the Tape 

  • The Owls hold a series of 13-10-2 with the Golden Bears, as Keene State has the slight advantage over WNE.
  • The Owls narrowly outshot the Golden Bears, 12-11, but Keene State only earned three corner kicks to WNE's four. 
  • Patrick Whelan stopped three over the 90 minutes for the Owls, while Kevin Strobel saved three, all during the second half, for the Golden Bears. 

First Half Highlights

  • Keene State struck first at the 6th minute mark, as Aidan Dean chipped a pass from Glenn Smith into the top right corner. 
  • In the 18th minute, Matthew Povall fed a pass to Promise Kpee, who fired the ball past Strobel and into the back of the net. 
  • The Golden Bears evened the score in the 31st and 32nd minute, as Troy Remillard netted both goals, one after he collected a ball inside the box and the other off a cross from Kory Caster, to lead the two teams into the half at two apiece. 

Second Half Highlights

  • The Owls started the second half strong, as LJ Luster picked up a deflection off Strobel from Samuel Binogono to put Keene State in the lead, 3-2, during the 60th minute. 
  • Remillard completed his hat-trick for WNE in the 84th minute, as he headed a cross sent by Caster, to even the score for the second time. 
  • The Golden Bears sealed the win over the Owls in the 87th minute, as Maurice Young picked up a pass from Logan Pingree.
