Western New England Scores in Every Inning, Slugs Keene State Baseball

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - Western New England University scored in all seven innings and went on to beat the Keene State College baseball team 32-11 on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex.

Records

  • Keene State:  6-12
  • Western New England:  12-6

How It Happened

The Golden Bears scored eight runs in the top of the first inning after the leadoff batter was retired and never stopped scoring after that en route to a non-conference victory.  Keene State got a double and home run from Matthew Goldman, who finished 2-for-2 and drove in three runs in his first start with the Owls.  Eight other Owls had a hit, while Connor Walsh had two RBI.  Josh DeFrancisco, Mac Struthers, John Taranovich, Brendan Eaton, Colin McKeon and Tom Meucci also drove in a run each.

After WNE's Aaron Rios grounded to short to begin the contest, the next five Golden Bears reached, including three doubles, a triple and a single as they raced out to a 4-0 advantage.  Joe Webber's liner to first was the second out, but the visitors doubled their lead before the Owls got out of the inning, as Jake Balderston and Alex Loparco had run-scoring singles sandwiching a two-run double from Rios.  Western New England sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, eight of whom scored.  Trailing 9-0, KSC got on the board in their half of the second with two down, as Goldman and Meucci traded spots with doubles to both sides of the outfield.  However, the Owls never slowed WNE's offense, surrendering four more runs in both the third and fourth innings, the latter of which saw the visitors record just one hit.  Keene State put up a crooked number in the bottom half of the fourth against three different Golden Bear relievers.  The highlight of the frame was Goldman's two-run homer to center that scored Michael Pascarelli, but Walsh also delivered a two-run single as KSC got within 17-8 after four.  Western New England immediately put four more runs on the board in the very next inning to prevent the Owls from getting back in the game.

Brian Vieira pitched the first two innings for the Owls, and took the loss to fall to 1-1.  Jeremy Morris, the third of eight different Golden Bear pitchers, got the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
