th minute, but the Owls offensive attack would prove to be too much on the evening for the Corsairs to handle as the Owls came away with a 2-1 win from Dr. Ron Butcher Field Thursday.
Records
- Keene State: 3-0, 3-0 LEC
- UMass-Dartmouth: 1-3, 1-3 LEC
How it Happened
The Owls offensive attack was fully on display on the evening as they were able to take strangle hold of the game early on and never let loose on the UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs, especially in the first half. Keene State got the opening mark in the 7
th minute of the game, specifically with 7:44 of elapsed time in the contest. Senior
Ashley Bates went in two on one with teammate
Maya Baker and Bates made the cross-field feed to Baker who finished the ball into the bottom right portion of the cage, past the dive of Corsair goalkeeper Jaimee O'Brien to give Keene State the early 1-0 lead. For Baker, it is her fourth of the spring season, after collecting a hat trick exactly 14 days ago against Rhode Island College. KSC's offensive attack would not stop there as the Owls would throw 17 shots towards goal in the half with nine shots going on goal. O'Brien stood tall in between the pipes for the Corsairs, however. O'Brien came away with eight first half saves for UMD.
UMass-Dartmouth saw their best chance come in the 35
th minute of the first half when Jillian Prout took a deep shot outside of the box that sailed in on Owls goalkeeper
Abbie Terrinca, who was able to fight it off to keep the Corsairs at bay. The shot by Prout would be the only shot and only shot on goal that UMass-Dartmouth would take in the first half, after being outshot 17-1. UMD would be caught offsides once in the half, with fouls leaned on the Owls side 8-3.
The second half brought more of the same dominance of the offensive side of the ball for the Owls as the first half did. Keene State would extend their lead late in the 56
th minute on a mishap in front of the net by UMass-Dartmouth. After a through ball was chased down by freshman
Rachel Souza, she was able to corral the ball and take a shot that deflected off the hand of Corsairs defender Lydia Hershey inside the penalty box, resulting in a penalty shot for the Owls. Senior captain
Maggie Vogt was able to freeze UMD goalkeeper Jaimee O'Brien and put the Owls ahead 2-0. Vogt picks up her first points of the season and her fourth career goal.
Keene State continued to turn on the offense, making double digits in shots in the second half with 12. Keene State would yield a goal to UMass-Dartmouth in the 75
th minute when the Owls were whistled for a foul just in front of the right corner of the field. Haley Dupre would take the ensuing free kick for UMD and used her right foot to put the ball perfectly into the middle of the box that found its way off teammate Hannah Sousa and into the goal to give the Corsairs just their second goal of the season. Sousa picks up her first career goal while dotting a Corsairs uniform. KSC would not allow UMass-Dartmouth to gain any momentum off their goal in the 75
th minute. Keene State would take the final four shots of the game and regain their offensive attack to take the 2-1 win over UMass-Dartmouth.
