KSC Baseball Posts Wild Split With Plymouth State

Owls Explode For 25 Runs In Opener; Fall 15-5 In Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLYMOUTH, N.H.--The Keene State College baseball team exploded for the most runs scored in a game in 12 years in a 25-1 win over host Plymouth State University in the opening game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at Parish Field on Friday.    The Panthers took game two by a score of 15-5.

Records
  • Keene State: 2-5, 1-1 LEC
  • Plymouth State: 2-4, 1-3 LEC

How it Happened - Game One

11 different players, including all nine starters, had at least one hit and drove in at least one run.  Colin McKeon was 3-for-4 with five RBI, while Joe Barter, Josh Beayon, Ben Burrell, and Michael Monteambeault each drive in two runs.    Isaac Keehn picked up his first win of the season by striking out seven in five innings of work; Beayon came on in relief to strike out four in the final two frames.

The Owls scored in each of the first six innings, taking advantage of six PSU errors and banging out 16 hits.   A single off the bat off Josh DeFrancisco, followed by a single from Brendan Eaton and a walk to Barter loaded the bases, and Beayon was hit by a pitch for the first run of the game.  McKeon followed with a bases loaded walk that made it 2-0.

Keene State added four more runs in the next inning, as Josh Andrade beat out an infield hit and scored on Barter's single to left.  McKeon added two more RBI with a single up the middle for a 6-0 lead.    The Owls poured in on with seven more runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to make it 18-1, but they weren't finished, adding three more in the fifth and another four in the sixth for a 25-1 lead that would become the final margin.

Seven pitchers saw action for the Panthers; Richie Marique took the loss by allowing six runs in 1.1 innings.

How it Happened - Game Two

If the Owls took advantage of miscues in the first game, it was the Panthers' turn in the nightcap.  Keene State committed five errors in game two, accounting for six unearned runs.

Five different players drove in a run for the Owls, while McKeon's hot hitting continued with two more hits.    KSC spotted the Panthers seven runs in the bottom of the first as Drew Metzdorf and James Salta both went deep.    Plymouth State added three runs in the second before the Owls attempted a comeback in the fifth.

Beayon scored as Jacob Laskosky reached on an error, and Andrade drew a bases loaded walk that made it 10-2.  Mark Barrett singled in a run with a hit to right, and DeFrancisco followed with an RBI groundout, and Eaton drove in another run with a single up the middle that made it 10-5.

The Owls gave it all back in the next inning by allowing five more runs in the sixth, and the KSC bats fell silent, managing just two hits in the final two innings.  Patrick McKeighan (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) and failed to record an out.  Greg Poggioli, Will Dolaher, and Ryan Sliwinski all saw time out of the bullpen.

Around the Horn
  • It was the first time Keene State scored 20+ runs in a game since a 28-11 win that came, ironically enough, against Plymouth State on April 24, 2009.   Keene State would also go over 20 runs in their next game that season, with a 21-0 whitewash of Western Connecticut State the next day.
  • The KSC record for runs scored in a game was set in 21 years ago, when the Owls mashed out a 31-2 win over Western Connecticut state on April 2, 2000.
  • McKeon became the first Owl to drive in five runs in a game in seven years; Joe Libby accomplished the feat in a 16-15 win over UMass Dartmouth on May 2, 2014.
Up Next
  • The two teams will meet again in Keene for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10.  First pitch is at noon.  Saturday's games will not count in the Little East Conference standings.
