Box Score KEENE, N.H.--Both teams found offense hard to come by as the Keene State College men's soccer team battled Roger Williams University to a scoreless tie in double-overtime in the second game of the Keene State/Home Depot Classic at Dr. Ron Butcher Field on Saturday evening.
Records:
- Keene State: 0-0-1
- Roger Williams: 0-0-2
How it Happened
The Owls outshot the Hawks 15-5, but could not find a way past RWU goalie Jack Avellar.Â
Mbambi Mbungu stung the palms of Avellar with a fierce drive in the sixth minute of the game, while KSC goalie
Nate Howard (two saves), stopped John McCarthy's effort in the 11th minute. Howard also kept the Hawks off the board by palming away Javi Beltran's shot with seven minutes left before halftime as the teams went into the break with no score.
Avellar made another good save by keeping out
Declan Coughlin not long after the restart.  The Owls poured on the attack, outshooting the Hawks 10-1 in the second stanza, but could not score.  Mbunbu nearly won the game with a fierce drive in the 103rd minute, but Avellar was equal to it to preserve the tie.
Inside the Box
- It was the first time the Owls had opened the season with a tie since a 3-3 draw with Clark University in the opener of the Roger WIlliams/Squad Locker Classic on September 2, 2017. Ironically, Keene State would play the Hawks the next day and also play to a tie, with that score being 1-1.  The Owls finished with five draws that season.
- Keene State had not played in overtime at home since 2016, when the Owls battled then No. 12 UMass Boston to a 1-1 tie on the final day of the regular season, on October 29, 2016.
- Several players made their collegiate debuts for the Owls, including Damir Hamzic, Mbambi Mbungu, Michael Mullen, Brandon Comire, Reed Rampinelli, Caleb Harmon, and Blake Palmer.
Up Next
- The tournament resumes for both teams on Sunday, September 5.  Roger Williams takes on Hobart College at 3 p.m., while Keene State will face Brandeis at 5 p.m.  Hobart defeated Brandeis 1-0 in the first game of the tournament.
