Two for Two! Behind Program-Best Round, Owls Overtake ECSU and Run Away to Defend LEC Championship

Day-Two Owls Get Job Done Again, Beat Field by Nearly 30 Strokes

RESULTS

WESTFIELD, Mass. – There must be something about the Owls and the final round at the Little East Conference championships.  Backed by senior Madi Mousley shooting a career-best 77 (+6) and Abby Weiterman adding an 86, the Keene State College women's golf team turned a close race – trailing by one stroke as a team with 18 holes to go – into a runaway, easily defending their Little East Conference championship on a memorable Sunday at the Tekoa Country Club near the campus of Westfield State University.

Trailing by one stroke (369-370) to Eastern Connecticut State University entering the day, KSC leveled up, achieving a new program-best round on the second day of the league championship to win it for the second straight year.  One could tell it might be a good day for the Owls early, as Mousley birdied two of her first six holes (No. 3, No. 6) and added five pars for an impressive 37 on the front nine.  In all, she had a par or better on eight consecutive holes including the first three on the back nine to help herself to a second-place individual finish at the event and KSC surge to the top of the team leaderboard, finishing with a 721 as a team.  Mousley improved by nine strokes from Saturday's round and shot better than 80 for the first time in her career in finishing with the 77.

"To finally break 80 for the first time and shoot my new personal best of 77 in day two of the LEC championship is a feeling I can't describe," said Mousley.  "I really focused on my putting the last couple weeks and it was great to see it pay off in a really big way."

Keene State's depth scorers also aided the cause, as Abby Weiterman improved by three shots from day one to finish with an 86 including a 41 on the back nine (just one shot behind Mousley).  She had five pars on the day including three on the final nine holes.  Mackenzie Hagearty and Sadie Murray each added a 94 as the Owls used their depth to ultimately overtake ECSU and individual medalist Caroline Goderre, who had five birdies and an eagle in a two-under round of 69 to finish two-over (75-69-144) for the tournament.  Mousley (86-77-163) surpassed defending league individual champion Remy Levin of the University of Southern Maine, beating her by five strokes today.  Weiterman placed fifth, Hagearty eighth, and Murray 11th among the 38-golfer field.

It was shades of the inaugural championship last year, as the Owls shot a 370 on the first day at the Valley Country Club in Warwick, R.I. and trailed leader Husson University by six strokes before recording a then-program best 359 as a team to beat the Eagles by 11 shots on the second day to take the title by five.

They made it even more convincing this time around, with their four scorers combining for 12 pars and the two birdies (both by Mousley) on the front nine.  By the turn, KSC had taken a 21-shot lead over Eastern with a combined 177 on the opening nine holes.  The Warriors ultimately finished with a 756 as a team to become the runner-up, while the second-best team score today behind the Owls was Southern Maine's 380.

"It was a great day for Keene State golf," said head coach Jeff Timmer.  "The entire team came to play today and they showed composure all day.  Madi was amazing…I am so happy for her and she deserved the round she had."

The Owls will get a spring reward this time around, qualifying automatically for the 2026-2027 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship to be held at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. from May 11-14.

"I am so proud to see how much the program has grown in just the past four years," added Mousley.  "I am so happy to be leaving it in a better place than when I got here.  All our hard work paid off and we are now looking forward to the opportunity to go to Virginia!"
