Hartford, CT - Freshman forward Beatrice Gratry (Chagrin falls,
Ohio) scored the game-winning goal with 3:39 left in overtime to
lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-2 win over the visiting
Keene State College Owls in field hockey action this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 3-3 for the season, while the Owls fall to 5-4.
After 11:21 of scoreless overtime play, fresh legs proved to be
the difference as Gratry entered the game with 5:00 remaining in
the extra frame and advanced the ball from midfield to the Keene
State goal by herself before scoring the unassisted goal. Both
teams had scoring chances in the overtime, including a penalty
stroke by Keene that was stymied by Trinity sophomore goalkeeper
Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio).
Trinity started the scoring with 10:38 remaining in the first
half when Gratry fed junior defender Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase,
Md.) for a score. The Owls tied the score on just their third shot
of the first half, as junior Annie Timpson (Derry, N.H.) shot the
ball past Bantam senior goalie Jess Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.) with
:40 left in the half.
Keene State went ahead, 2-1, on a goal by sophomore Nichole
Dallas (Marlow, N.H.) early in the second half, but Gratry, who had
a hand in all three Trinity scores, assisted senior co-captain
midfielder Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) on the game-tying goal with
7:16 remaining.
With 3:34 to go in regulation, Keene junior goalie Lindsay
Hamilton (Brattleboro, Vt.) saved a penalty stroke shot by Hoppock.
Hamilton finished the game with 18 saves, while Martin saved nine
and Gillespie, who was inserted into the game for the Owl penalty
stroke only, had one for Trinity.
