'AMHERST, MA 10/9/03- The 17th-ranked Amherst College field
hockey team defeated visiting non-conference foe Keene State
College on Thursday, 3-1. The Jeffs used goals from senior
co-captain Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) and sophomores Erin O'Hare
(Bowdoinham, ME) and Katherine Skrivan (St. Louis, MO) to improve
to 7-2 on the year.
The Jeffs took an early lead when junior Lauren Anderson
(Telluride, CO) sent a long crossing pass to Ryan on the right side
at the 27:58 mark and she punched her fourth goal of the season
into the cage. Amherst went into the break with a 1-0 lead, but
Keene St. evened the score less than a minute into the second half
when junior Kaitlin Henley (Somers, NY) sent a shot near the cage
and senior Tanya Strong (Hatfield, MA) deflected the ball over the
keeper's head. O'Hare put the Jeffs on top for good with 20:31
remaining in regulation when she tipped in a pass from Ryan for her
second goal of the year. Skrivan added an insurance goal with a
laser from the left side off a feed from junior defender Emma
Feinstein (Takoma Park, MD) with just under 11 minutes left.
Amherst's defense dominated throughout, not allowing a shot in
the first half, and permitting only four for the game. Junior
goalkeeper K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) collected three saves in
the win while sophomore Michelle Codding (Jericho, VT) and
first-year Catlin Baril (Canton, MA) split time in net for Keene
St. and had a pair of saves each. The Owls fall to 7-5 with the
loss.
