NCAA Field Hockey: Owls Fall in Double-Overtime

KEENE, N.H. 11/10/04- Kristy Veazie (Dexter, Me.) had two goals, including the game-winner at the 2:14 mark of the second-overtime to lift the University of Maine- Farmington to a 3-2 victory over Keene State College in a first round game of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament played Wednesday at Owl Athletic Complex in Keene, N.H.

Withstanding a flurry of shots by Keene State in the seven-on-seven overtime, the Beavers gained control of the ball in transition, and Veazie beat KSC goalie Sara Joyce (Hampstead, N.H.) with her team-high 14th goal of the season. Maine-Farmington (15-5) advances to the second round when they will play Ursinus College (Pa.) at William Smith College (N.Y.) on Saturday. Keene State, the Little East Champs, concludes its season with a 14-8 mark.

KSC took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Katy Pokrywka (Roxbury, Conn.) on a slow dribbling shot that beat UMF goalie Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, Me.) at the 16:11 mark of the first half. Maine-Farmington got that goal back on Veazie's first goal of the game following a scramble in the front of the net.

The two teams traded goals in the second half. Amanda Rosenbeck (Wilder, Vt.) put KSC ahead 2-1 on a well executed corner play at the five minutes into the half. The Beavers answered 51 seconds later on a goal by Becky Cristiansen (Windham, Me.) to the far corner.

While KSC wasn't able to capitalize on its numerous opportunities, Maine-Farmington took advantage on its chance to win the game. "I thought we were the stronger team in the overtime, but we were just unlucky," said Kaitlin Henley (Somers, N.Y.), the Owls' senior forward. "They came down once and scored on us. All of my shots were wide. I just couldn't get one on goal."

"It was very frustrating," said KSC Coach Amy Watson. "We created numerous shots, but couldn't finish it."

Joyce finished with nine saves for the Owls, who were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. Biette with 11 saves had a strong game in goal for Maine-Farmington which was making its first trip to the NCAAs.

It was the first meeting between the two teams.
