PLYMOUTH, N.H. 9/25/04- Freshman Amy Dubois (Jefferson, N.H.)
scored two goals, including the game-winner with five minutes
remaining Saturday afternoon, as Keene State College upset Plymouth
State University, 3-2, in a key Little East Conference field hockey
game at Arold Field. It was the Owls first win at PSU since the
1997 season.
The Owls, who snapped a four-game losing streak during which
they were held scoreless, improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the
LEC. Keene State won the LEC regular season title last year with a
10-0 mark. The loss stops a three-game winning streak for PSU,
dropping the Panthers to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Plymouth State was the preseason favorite to win the LEC.
PSU took an early 1-0 lead in the first half on junior Lilly
Silva's (Lowell, Mass.) team-leading 10th goal of the season,
assisted by senior Caitlin Moran (Rowley, Mass.). KSC answered with
Dubois' first goal midway through the half, and the score at the
break was tied at 1-1.
Keene State came out strong after the half and took the lead on
a goal by sophomore Amanda Rosenbeck (Wilder, VT.), assisted by
freshman Marrissa Boccaccio (West Hartford, Conn.). The intensity
increased as Plymouth State tied it up on an unassisted goal by
junior Katie Kovacs (Hampton, N.H.) with 12:24 left in the second
half. After a back-and-forth exchange, Dubois added her second of
the game with only 5:05 left, and the Owls held on for the win. The
slim advantage in shots on goal went to Plymouth State, 16-14.
Sophomore Sarah Joyce (Hampstead, N.H.) made 12 stops for KSC in
the game, and freshman goalkeeper Katie Randall (Portsmouth, N.H.)
recorded seven saves for PSU. Plymouth State plays again Wednesday
at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.), while Keene State heads to
Fitchburgh State on Monday (4:00 p.m.).
