GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore forward Karen Robinson (Phillipston,
Mass./Quabbin Regional) finished a break away goal with less than
seven minutes remaining in the second overtime period to lift the
Keene State College Owls to a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference
field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in
Gorham.
With the win Keene State improves to 9-4 overall and moves into a
tie for first place with USM in the LEC with a 6-1 mark. The loss
snapped a four-game win streak for the Huskies who are now 9-4
overall and 6-1 in conference action.
Robinson was the recipient of a well-time through ball from
sophomore midfielder Erin Dallas (Marlow, N.H./Keene) in the 94th
minute of action. Dallas slotted the ball behind the USM defense to
an on-rushing Robinson who hit a long driven shot that bounced over
a diving attempt from USM sophomore goalkeeper Allie Hill (Cape
Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) for the game-winner.
"I just came into the game, ran to the circle and Dallas passed the
ball to me," said Robinson describing her game-winner. "Their
goalie went down and I put it over her. It was a great
feeling."
"This is a huge win for us," said KSC Coach Amy Watson, who has led
the Owls to three consecutive LEC Championships. "There's a
lot of season to go, but now we control our own destiny."
Dallas forced the overtime action when she pulled the Owls even
with Southern Maine in the 58th minute scoring on the second of her
two penalty shots awarded in the half.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Southern Maine took a
2-1 lead on goals from junior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough,
Maine/Scarborough) and junior forward Missy Rivet (Bridgton,
Maine/Lake Region). Keene State took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute
on a goal from freshman forward Marcy Calovich (Brookfield,
Conn./Brookfield). Albert tied the scored up in the 30th minute on
an unassisted goal, before Rivet gave the Huskies the lead in the
50th minute after an assist from sophomore midfielder Cristina
Corson (Naples, Maine/Lake Region).
Hill was solid in goal for Southern Maine making 10 saves,
including stopping Dallas' first penalty shot in the second half.
Keene State sophomore goalkeeper Vikki Stoessell (Derry,
N.H./Pinkerton Academy) earned the win for the Owls making seven
saves.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 10) at 4 p.m.
when it hosts Colby College in a non-conference game. Keene State
travels to Trinity College on the same date for a 6 p.m.
non-conference tilt.
