Owl freshman makes a splash in opening meet

            WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT. 11/6/10 – Drew Ledwith won't soon forget his first swim meet at Keene State College.  The freshman from Keene, N.H. not only won three races, but also set a school record and posted an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time at the New England Invitational at place at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt. on Saturday.

            The non-scoring Invitational included KSC, Middlebury, WPI Assumption, and Post University.

            Ledwith had an auspicious start to his KSC career, winning the 200 free (1:45.98), the 100 breast, and the 500 free (4:35.80) races. His time in the 500 free was a school record and a NCAA provisional qualifying time.

            Freshman Jared Hyde also began his Owl swim career in style by winning the 100 breast (1:02.04) and the 200 I.M. (2:01.32).

            Senior Dan Morse also won the 1,000 free (10:07.56).

            KSC won three relay events.  Junior Justin Churchill and sophomore Austin Harris teamed with freshmen Tyler Tambascio and Dan Oliveira to win the 400 medley relay (3:43.33).  Seniors Cody Larrimore and Lucas Pozzetta joined freshmen James Black and Hyde to win the 200 free relay (1:27.43).  The team of senior D.J. Collis, Churchill, Hyde, and Black won the 200 medley relay (1:41.81).  

            Returning All-Americas, junior Jillian Whitaker and sophomore Kaila Umbarger picked right up where the left off last season.  Whitaker won the 200 free (2:02.58) and the 100 breast (108.99) and Umbarger won the 50 free (24.69).

            Junior Maureen O'Leary won the 100 fly (1:00.52).

            The KSC women also won four relays.  Freshmen Stephanie Murray and Lianna Wissman joined Whitaker and Umbarger to win the 400 medley relay (4:07.58).  Freshman Morgan Charlow teamed with Whitaker, Wissman, and Umbarger to win the 200 free relay (1:42.28).    O'Leary, Wissman, Whitaker, and Umbarger joined forces to win the 200 medley relay (1:52.93).  The team of Umbarger, Murray, Wissman, and Whitaker also won the 400 free relay.

          In the diving events held at Keene State, the Owl men took the two top spots in the one-meter event with Joshua Tuller tallying 206 points and Derek Peabody finishing with 197 points.  In the three-meter event, Derek was first and Joshua was third.

       In the women's competition, Rachel Battis won the one-meter event and was second in the three-meter event.

 

            The owls will participate in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power on Tuesday at Spaulding Gym Pool.
