Owls trounce Pioneers 7-2

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 10/29/13 – Senior Katelyn Simula (Bridgewater, N.H.) and sophomore Lyndsie Rabenius (North Hampton, N.H.) each scored two goals to lead Keene State College to a 7-2 victory over Smith College in non-conference field hockey action at chilly Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.

Senior Aimee Donaruma (Hampden, Mass.), junior Marisa Lemoine (Berlin, N.H.), and freshman Sammi Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) also found the back of the net for the Owls.

The Owls, who extend their winning streak to four games, improve to 16-3.  Smith, which has dropped its last four games, falls to 10-7.

Keene State took a 1-0 lead on Simula's first goal of the game at the 30:07 mark of the first half.  Her shot on a corner got through the traffic in front and into the net. Later in the half, Donaruma put home a rebound to give KSC a 2-0 lead at the break.

Lemoine and Simula scored goals within a three minutes span early in the second half to extend Keene State's lead to 4-0.  It was Simula's eighth goal of the season.

Taking a lead pass from Donaruma, Smith added a goal on a transition play, her 12th of the season, to make it a 5-0 game at the 24:30 mark of the second half.

KSC used an aggressive offense and stifling defense to keep Smith in check most of the game. The Pioneers finally got on the board at the 16:06 mark when senior Marissa Vara(Hudson, Mass.) tipped in a centering pass from classmate Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich.).

Rabenius scored her two goals three minutes apart to push Keene State's lead up to 7-1.  It was her team leading 12th and 13th goal of the season.

Senior Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn.) accounted for the final goal of the game with 1:16 to play.

KSC outshot the Pioneers 33-12 and had a 10-7 advantage in corner opportunities.

Sophomores Meaghan Dwyer (Rutland, Mass.) and Chloe Audesse (Goffstown, N.H.) each played a half in goal for the Owls.  Dwyer made one save while Audesse stopped three shots.

Sophomore Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md.) finished the game with 11 saves for Smith.

Keene State has won eight of the nine all-time meetings with Smith.

Both teams return to conference play on Saturday.  The Owls host UMass-Dartmouth in a battle for first placed in the Little East Conference (1:30 p.m.).  Smith College travels to Clark (1 p.m.) for a NEWMAC contest.
