Owls Splash Wheaton, Springfield In Tri-Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Keene State College men's swimming and diving team toppled Wheaton (Mass.) College and Springfield College in a tri-meet at the Art Linkletter Natatorium at Springfield College on Saturday.

The Owls rolled to a 229-59 win over Wheaton, while beating Springfield 198-100.

Keene State swept the top two places in the opening 200 medley relay.  Chris DiGiacomo, Nathan Shepard, Bobby McDowell, and Greg Youngstrom won the race in 1:37.44, just ahead of teammates Randy Dunton, Ethan Etheridge, Cole Hogg, and Luke Sprague, who finished in 1:38.62.

Freshman Christopher Deegan won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:59.23, while Shahar Resman led a 1-2-3 Keene State finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.27.  DiGiacomo was second in 1:47.35, followed by Ryan Boraski in 1:47.72.

Keene State also took the top three places in the 100 backstroke, with a win from McDowell in 54.85, followed by Mark Strothenke (55.44) and Dunton (56.11).

Hogg took first place in the 200 fly, winning in 1:58.68, with Dustin Whyte (2:03.25) in second and Resman (2:05.13) in third.  Youngstrome won the 50 free, in 21.38, and there was a photo finish in the 100 free where Boraski (48.06) edged Youngstrom (48.18) by the narrowest of margins.

McDowell picked up another win in the 200 back, in 1:59.20, as did Hogg in the 500 freestyle in 4:53.65 and DiGiacomo in the 100 fly in 53.06.

Cody Fitzgerald was fourth on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, scoring 241.40 on the 3-meter and 244.20 on the 1-meter.

The Owls closed out the day by taking the top two spots in the 400 free relay, as Boraski, Sprague, DiGiacomo, and Youngstrom combined for a win in 3:12.39, while Hogg, Resman, Zach Caroll, and Lugan Duffley were right behind in 3:15.13.

Keene State gets back in action next weekend, in a tri-meet with Tufts and Middlebury at Middlebury College.
