Records Fall on Final Day of NEISDA Championship

Kingston, RI - Three school records fell on sunday night on the last day of the 2016 NEISDA Championships at the University of Rhode Island. Sophomore Hope Walsh and juniors Christopher Barriss and Ryan Boraski all broke records on their way to indivudal event victories.

Walsh kept the ball rolling after teammate Alison Bartlett started off the night with a victory in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 51.56 was enough to edge out Simmons College's Miriam Swisher (51.90). Brianna Laliberte swam to third, with a lifetime best time of 54.01 seconds.

Walsh then stole the spotlight for one last time this season by swimming a 17:25.34 in the 1,650. This time is an NCAA "B" cut, and broke the previous school record set by Jackie Foster in 2010. Her split at the 1,000 was also just one second off the school record set by Julie Trodden in 2013. The old record stood at 17:28.37.

Walsh was not alone in her victorious swim; sophomore Rachel MacKinnon and freshman Kylee Russell both scored big in this event. MacKinnon swam to a sixth-place finish with her time of 18:27.33. This is 20 seconds faster than her swim in December at MIT. Russell was nearly 27 faster than her swim from the Little East Conference Championships two weekends ago, finishing in ninth with an 18:56.30.

Laliberte then hit the pool one more time individually for the Owls. She swam to a second place finish in the 50 backstroke (27.81). Teammate Olivia Gallugi got a close third in 28.27. The KSC seniors then had another 2-3 finish, with Corrina Nickerson (2:29.70) and Madison Sestak (2:29.73) claiming these spots in the 200 yard breaststroke.

One more senior duo made their lasting impact on KSC swimming by finishing first and second in the 200 butterfly. Katherine Brady doubled on butterfly victories by taking the event in 2:11.91. Amber Long was not far behind in 2:12.68. Sophomore Maragret Dean then went on to place second in the 100 IM with a time of 1:02.13.

The women's meet concluded with the team of Laliberte, Gallugi, Long and Bartlett swimming to victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Their time of 3:32.69 won the event by four seconds and nearly missed the school record by just two tenths of a second.

In men's action, Ryan Boraski was a double event-winner for the Owls. He was victorious in his signature event, the 100 freestyle in 45.64. Teammate Zach Carroll took the second spot in 47.62. Boraski went on to win and break the 100 IM record in 53.06. The previous mark was set by Randall Dunton in 2015. Senior Greg Youngstrom was third in 55.19.

Christopher Barriss also had a dominating race in the 50 backstroke. He won the event by over one and a half seconds, and broke his own school record set in December. His time of 23.45 secured him the victory. Classmate Nathan Shepard then swam to a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.05) after winning the 50 and placing second in the 100 distance of this stroke earlier on in the meet.

Senior Cole Hogg pulled out a close win the 200 butterfly, swimming a 1:53.23. It was enough to out-race Gordon College's Daniel Fauber who swam a 1:53.31. Hogg then teamed up with Boraski, Carroll and Logan Duffley to dominate the 400 free relay in 3:07.38. They finished over five seconds ahead of their closest competitor.

Divers Cody Fitzgerald and Jake Driscoll finsihed with another one-two finish on the three-meter board. Their scores of 402.95 and 299.10 gave them the top two spots on the podium one more time. RObert Zawasky also helped the Owls in the team scores by placing fourth with 233.85 points.
